Tips for Riding in the Heat
So the first (of hopefully many) Hack the Heat’s is coming up this week. We’re expecting around 30 or so riders working 2 different courses (a 25 mile ride with a slow climb out and easy descent back and a 34 mile ride with a pretty exciting looking run up into Red Rock Canyon). For many of us riding in the Vegas locale will be a new one. While we’ll be on the road early, it will still be hot and dry and if we’re really lucky it will be windy. Here are some tips to stay hydrated and healthy during and after the ride.

Review: 2011 Cannondale Synapse Carbon 3 Ultegra
I’ve put about 750 miles on my Synapse and I figure it’s about time to write a review of the critter. But before I get in to the Cannondale, I should give some context on the bike I was riding before.
In 2001, after 8 years living in AK with exactly zero miles ridden on the road, I moved to Virginia and finally got myself a road bike again. I picked up a new Lemond Zurich with Ultegra components. I’ve always been find of steel frame bikes and the Lemond struck me as one of the great, affordable steel frame bikes available at the time. It was certainly a great bike… maybe more than I needed. I was about 220lbs and fairly out of shape. But it’s a fast, good handling bike that I could ride has hard as I wanted without worrying about riding past the limits of the bike.

Defcon Bike Ride logistics update
Hey everyone — with less than a week away to the Defcon Bike Ride — Here is what you need to know:
- Any last minute updates will be tweeted: @cycleoverride
- We are meeting at the RIO at 5:30 am Thurs. Aug 4th. (Watch twitter and here for the exact location we will determine when we arrive at the Rio) We will then ferry over to McGhies somehow (TBD) which they will be there at 6am for fittings and water, etc… Have some cash on you ($5) to buy some extra water if you don’t have a camelbak or whatever. I don’t think there will be extra water on the route.
- We are planning on a main route and there is potential for a longer route (routes here) which we’ll decide upon Thursday morning if there is enough interest. If there is a longer route – they will get fitted and leave first.
- If you have ordered a CycleOverRide/Hack the Heat bike Jersey — you have to pay Bruce for by (Date) or he isn’t bringing your with him. The pay pal address ($70 per jersey) is heidi AT shmoo dot com.
- You should have already rented and confirmed a bike with McGhies by now. Please don’t show up with out a reservation as we will have no way to take your money. If you have your own bike we’ll see you there 🙂
- We may need help ferrying people over to/from McGhies. If you have room in a local or rental car, please let me know.
- Once again — this ride isn’t for the inexperienced cyclist. You are still welcome – we just want to make sure you know what you are getting yourself into. You will not realize how much liquid you are losing. It will be hot and the ride is slightly uphill the entire way out. If you have any questions or concerns or just aren’t sure if this is for you — please connect with Bruce or I. You will be able to turn around an coast back — but we want you to be aware that we have a need to return to the bike shop before it gets too hot. Dehydration and overheating are real concerns here. We are CYCLING IN THE DESERT! 🙂 Just sayin.

MapMyRide Tour de France update: We are in 9th place!
Hey everyone — Check this out:
We are in 9th place — mostly thanks to Wayne J., Owen J. and George B. But alot of people have 3,4,5, and 6 points contributing to our team total of 112 points. We’d be many more places down if it wasn’t for all you who are submitting and getting a few points here or there over time.
Since the TdF is off today — you can submit today or tmrw (or both) for Tuesdays ride, and the system will pick the best ride.
