How to rent your bike for Hack the Heat
Update – we will meet at 5:30am – and please ignore the first pickup time on the McGhies Signup Form.
Hello Hackers and OverRiders!
This is the second thing you may need to respond to ASAP for the Defcon Bike Ride on August 4th, 2011 in Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada! (The first email was sent out my Bruce (@gdead) regarding ordering bike Jersey’s. If you are interested you have until July 6th to get an order in (reply to this email if you need info)
Here’s the deal – we have partnered with McGhies Bike Shop in Las Vegas for our ride. Yes – they will throw your clipless pedals and seat posts on if you insist. They have 3 levels of road bikes: a ~$40 Cannondale Synapse, and a ~$100 Lance Armstrong starter kit road bike (think Madone.) There’s also a $125 level also.
WARNING: Remember shmoocon ticket sales? First come first serve! — there are about 18 $40 male road bikes and 5 female — after that it’s a hybrid or a $100 bike. You can always ship out your bike for about $130 also on some airlines!
Here’s what YOU have to do:
You need to go here and reserve your ride. You will need to pay with a credit card. You should note anything special here and you should indicate you are reserving for the Defcon Bike Ride.
Here is what you should put in the comment box: (your own specs of course)
“Defcon Bike Ride
Size: 54 cm – will bring my own pedals
Need bike at 6am”
And for pick up:
Please select pickup at store – Las Vegas
Use this chart based on your height and inseam to figure out your size and fill the comment box out accordingly:
Please forward your reservation confirmation to [email protected] just so we can have a count of how many people have actually reserved a bike. We will take a final headcount a few days before Vegas — so we know we leave the Rio with everyone.

Hack the Heat Update
Otherwise known as the Defcon Bike Ride — things are coming together. This is what we know so far.
- We will be renting and departing from McGhies bike shop.
- Bikes will be pre-paid for individually (for a bunch of reasons) online before the event. In other words — you will need to already have a reservation to come on the ride. You will be responsible for paying the bike shop directly (more info on this in a minute)
- You can bring your own pedals
- You will get one water bottle – a 2nd one is ~$2.
- The ride is gentle uphill out, mostly downhill back. We will have a map of the ride soon.
- We will have instructions on ordering the bike jersey very soon.
- We will be sending out an email on next steps (for bike jersey and rental) in the next few days – please respond to this as quickly as possible so we can get the correct data to the bike shop and start locking in reservations.
- The bike shop has about 18-20 men’s road bikes, and 5 female road bikes at the normal price level. They have some additional road bikes at the “madone” / $120/day price level
- Please do not reserve your bike until you get the email from us later this week and you respond to it (that way the bike shop can correlate you with our group – let’s not create extra work for them)
If you have questions please post them in the comments of this post so everyone can see the answer.
Once again — the ride is *Updated August 4th. We meet in the Rio (specific location TBD) at 5:30am Vegas time. We want to be on the road as close to 6am as possible and be back by 9-9:30.
